Chic for Cheap: Lululemon Wunder Under vs. Gap Gfast Leggings

I love Lululemon. In fact, I use all my saved pennies from finding good deals on pretty much everything else and spend it on Lululemon. If you had asked me a few years ago, if I would ever pay $100 for stretchy black pants, I would have called you crazy. But, as the popularity of Lululemon and their “magic” butt pants grew – I fell, well more accurately, dove into it’s Luon goodness. In fact, a few months ago, I even paid retail for a pair of famous Lululemon Wunder Under leggings. These leggings are awesome because they’re versatile – great for home/work/gym. So, using the CPW (cost per wear) equation, I was able to justify the $$78. Sort of. I’m a born bargain shopper and the fact that I paid nearly $100 and retail for something as generic as black leggings is a little absurd.
Luon fabric IS amazing, but it also IS just fabric. Right? I knew there had to be a cheaper alternative to Lululemon and I was intent on finding it. I did end up trying many different brands – from Lucy to Alo to Adidas. Nothing fit quite right. I’d been eyeing Gap’s new Gfast line for a while and saw that it was gaining some decent traction. Their new logo is also suspiciously similar to the Lululemon logo. I’ve been a big fan of Gap for the last 10+ years and figured I’d give them a try. The Gap Gfast leggings in black is nearly identical to the Lululemon Wunder Under. Here is the criteria I used to compare the two:
- Fabric – Luon vs. 88% Nylon, 12% Spandex. The thickness and fit were pretty much identical. The Gfast leggings were shorter which was great for me (although Lulu does offer free tailoring).
- Details – The Wunder Under had a built in pocket while the Gfast leggings had a built-in pocket AND a zippered pocked in the back (hidden so it doesn’t show).
- Fit – The photos above indicates how similar they look. I got the Wunder Under in size 8 and Gap Leggings in M and the fit was nearly identical.
- Quality – My big issue with Lululemon is that if you don’t wash it on gentle with similar fabrics, the clothing will pill. This hasn’t happened yet to either pair of Wunder Under or Gfast so I will update this article after a few more washings.
- Price – Wunder Under retails for $78. Gap Gfast leggins retails for $49.50 – but (and this is a big BUT), I went to Gap during their 40% off sale for card members and scored them for $29.70. That’s a savings of $49.30. Even without the discount, Gfast Leggings are still $28.50 or 36% less than Wunder Under.
In conclusion: I still think Lululemon is a great luxury brand for athletic wear. They have done a great job creating comfortable, functional fitness wear that is also cute (and makes your butt look good). However, I give the highest kudos to Gap for creating a line that is reasonably priced (especially with additional sales/coupons) and made of superb quality. I’ve tried several other Gfast pieces, including tops and really love them all.
