Freebie Alert: $175 Million Cosmetics Settlement – Do You Qualify?

Posted by missmelon on January 18, 2009 in Freebies

Heads up – if you purchased cosmetics (makeup & fragrance) in a Department Store between May 29, 1994 and July 16, 2003, then you are a benefactor of the $175 million class action cosmetics settlement.  While this doesn’t mean free makeup for life…or a hefty check in the mail, you can get some freebie cosmetics!

Why?  The lawsuit states that major Department Stores violated antitrust laws by agreeing to only sell cosmetics at the suggested retail price (MSRP) which means no competition and no discounts to the consumer.  This explains why your favorite Chanel shoes may go on sale, but not your Chanel fragrance or lipstick (and why makeup and fragrances are often excluded from sales and coupons).

To take part, all customers need to do is to fill out a short form in-store stating that they made a purchase.  No receipts or proof of purchase is required.  You will receive one free cosmetic product up to $25 in value.

Stores include:  Macy’s, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and more.

There is one catch – the offer is first come, first serve only on Tuesday, January 20th while supplies last. So if you get a chance, head to your local mall early.

More details, including a full list of participating retailers and cosmetic brand giveaways can be found here.
