Chic for Cheap: Thakoon for Target

Next time you’re at Target make sure to check out their new designer labels in addition to the newly released Hayden Hartnett line! Thakoon Panichgul, an American designer of Thai descent, has designed a chic new collection for Target’s GO International line. “Colors, prints, details –this collection is extravagant in style. Not price.” But hurry, most items are under $50, and the line is only available until the end of the month. The designer, usually known as Thakoon featured classic silhouettes with bold prints.

I’ve noticed that the Go International designers are creating pieces which nearly replicate pieces from their couture line. Take for instance the Shibori dress above from Thakoon’s Spring 2008 line, retails for $1,350 (yes, that’s a comma…not a period). The dress created for Target is just $39.99, less than 10% of the “original”. This has caused some controversy amongst Thakoon loyalists and fashionistas. After all, why shell out thousands when you can get something comparable for considerably less? Lucky for you – the choice if for you to make. Unlucky for you, the dress below is sold-out online. You can snag one on eBay for around $70 or so. If you’re a fan of the print, you can still snag a Shibori print shirt for $14.99.
