Chic for Cheap: Merona Kasia Boots versus Frye Melissa Button Boots

Posted by Colleen on November 18, 2011 in Fashion

This time of year I think we can all agree, saving money is a plus! But what if we are pining after the perfect pair of riding boots? (ahem, me!) What’s a budget-minded girl to do when Frye Melissa Button boots seem to be screaming my name?

Well leave it to Target to create something similarly drool-worthy for way less! I should have known!

The Frye Melissa Button Boot retails for $328 and comes in a whopping 17 different colors of beautiful leather.

The Merona Kasia Boot from Target retails for $69.99 (gasp!) and comes in black, brown and cognac (lighter than it sounds).

I was very pleased to learn that the Target Merona Kasia Boot compared very nicely to the Frye Melissa as far as shaft height, heel height, leather outer, etc. Now sure, the Merona Kasia has a man-made interior lining vs. the real leather of the Frye (you do get what you pay for after all) but face it, for the amount of money you are saving it very well may be worth it! Target is even offering a buy one get one half offer on many items (Kasia boots included) until midnight on 11/16 with free shipping when you spend $50! Even more savings!!!! Two pair for $105!

My local Target wasn’t fortunate enough to have the boots in stock when I went to stalk them. I have read many reviews online though saying they are more of a pebbled leather than smooth. I have also learned that they are extremely comfortable to many wearers.

What do you think? Have you tried the budget-friendly Merona Kasia boot? Is the savings worth it over the Frye Melissa Button? Chime in, let us know what you think! Here is a comparison of the two different pairs:

5 Tips to Save on Traveling

Posted by missmelon on August 19, 2011 in Money Saving Tips

If you’re a savvy saver, you’re sure to already know how much money you can conserve with the help of coupons. Sure, couponing can be a little time intensive if you’re looking for a lot of deals all the time, but there’s no denying that they can slash the cost of everything from your daily shopping bill to occasional treats. But have you ever thought about taking your coupon skills and applying them to your holidays? With a little time and imagination you can travel for less, all thanks to a few little coupons.

As with all couponing, the first thing to bear in mind when you’re looking for holiday deals is flexibility. If you want to be able to enjoy the biggest savings, you’ll want to keep an open mind about everything from your transport to the kind of places you might like to stay. That’s not to say it’s impossible to choose a particular destination and stick to it, but you might have to wait longer for good deals to roll around.

There are some simple ways to save on your future travels.  Get started now to maximize your savings.

  1. Find out if you already have access to money saving coupons through organizations you’re with. For example, if you’re signed up to AAA for roadside assistance or are a frequent flier, you could have deals open to you already.
  2. Join daily deal mailing lists for activities and restaurants of your travel destination. Most of these deals are valid for a year, so if you’re headed to New York City in November, now would be a great time to start buying daily deal offers.  To avoid post-vacation spam, we suggest creating a new email address.
  3. Before you book, check out Dealio to see if we have any great coupons or deals perfects for your holidays plans – the top deals change every day, so if you’re dedicated to finding the perfect holiday, setting aside some time to hunt down the best deals is sure to have you sitting pretty on some great travel plans in no time.
  4. Travel involves more than just the flight, car, and hotel.  You can save a lot of money by mentally packing ahead.  For instance, if you’re headed somewhere tropical in 2012, why not look for swimsuit, flip flop, and even sunblock deals now?  Just remember that the more you save before you go, the more you’ll be able to afford when you get there.
  5. Try to be as flexible as possible. For example, if you’re planning to fly to Australia try to book your trip around when’s cheapest to fly, not necessarily just when you want to go. Flight comparison engines like Skyscanner offer both month and year view, so you can really see when’s cheapest to fly.

One last to remember is that while couponing and “extreme couponing” is big in the US, some countries still aren’t as used to dealing with them. You’re sure to be able to find plenty of coupons, online and in local papers and magazines, but be prepared for waitresses or staff who are slow to accept and process them. Don’t worry about it though, it’s their job to do it and the savings are sure to be well worth any wait.

Remember that saving money on your holiday means more than getting money off your accommodation or fancy meals while you’re there, it means cutting your costs across the board. Look for deals that will make the whole thing cheaper for you – such as money off essentials like toothpaste or sun screen – and you won’t have any nasty surprises when you come to adding up your travel bill.

How to Buy High End Beauty Products for Cheap

Posted by Colleen on August 4, 2011 in Money Saving Tips

High end beauty products are more than just pretty packaging and outrageous price tags.  Companies who sell high end products spend years of research and millions (!!) of dollars developing the cleansers, creams, lotions, make up and other skin care products that will cure our common beauty ailments.  As consumers, we feed this development by our never ending search for products that live up to their claim of helping us look and feel more beautiful.

The downside?  These magical creams and potions often come with super high price tags.  While many reputable beauty stores offer a generous return or exchange policy, once you’ve purchased a product, there’s a very low likelihood that you’ll actually return it.  As a result, even if you didn’t love the product, there’s still a good chance that it’s sitting somewhere in your home.  All those unused or discarded product are like wasted dollars sitting in your medicine cabinet and drawers.

Well waste your money no more.  We have found a great way to buy high end product – everything from perfume to eye cream for a cheaper price and without the commitment of a full-sized product.  The solution?  Buy samples.  Our favorite place to shop is eBay.  eBay has an amazing selection of high end beauty products both well known brands and salon brands.

Our top reasons for buying samples on eBay:

1.  You can try before you buy.  In fact, many sellers actually sell lots of samples.

2.  Avoid the trek to your local department store to ask for a sample (and possibly get up sold other products while you’re there).

3.  Ounce for ounce you will find you can save money when you shop eBay first.  For example:

Buy five 0.1 oz samples of La Mer Eye Balm Intense for $49.99. Five samples is equal to one full size product which retails for $165That’s a savings of over $100.

Buy one 0.24 oz jar of the famous La Mer Creme de la Mer moisturizing cream for just $21.98. That’s works out to be about $88 per ounce.  Four of these samples is almost equal to the full sized one ounce cream which retails for $135.  That’s a savings of over $45.

You can even buy hard to find brands or newly released products.  One example is the 0.27 oz jar of Amore Pacific Time Release Cream for $29.99. That works out to be about $111 per ounce.  The full sized version is 1.7 oz and retails for $400.  That’s about $235 per ounce which means you save over $120.

You can try a 0.05 oz sample of the uber lux Creed Spring Flower for just $5.25.  Granted, you’ll need 20 samples to equal the full one ounce, but you’ll still pay only $105 per ounce.  The full sized version is 1 ounce and retails for $140. That’s a savings of $35.

Want more reason to buy high end products on eBay?

4.  Often on eBay, you’ll pay no shipping costs and no taxes.  We’re based in the San Francisco Bay Area where tax is around 9.5% – that’s a HUGE savings!

5.  Travel often?  These samples are perfect for your carry on bag.  Plus you don’t have to worry about it getting lost or forgotten – think about it, losing a $400 jar of moisturizer is akin to a nice piece of jewelry.

6.   If you’re a germaphobe and even if you aren’t – samples are fantastic.  Every time you open a jar and dip your finger in (or even a fancy spatula), you risk contaminating your bottle.  With samples, you can open a fresh package every other week.

7.  If you’re a product junkie and want to try something new each week, you can without breaking your budget.  No more wasted bottles of perfume taking up space.  Simply toss a sample in your bag and you’re set for the week.

eBay is a terrific market place to shop when you’re looking to try a high end beauty product but don’t want to spend the money on retail. Head to eBay and do a search for something you’ve been crazy to try.

A few words of advice from our eBay shopping experts:  avoid buying full sized products.  We know it’s counter-intuitive, but we have seen counterfeit cosmetics and perfumes.  Obviously, this doesn’t mean that there aren’t legitimate, wonderful sellers on eBay.  However, it’s best to use your precaution by checking out their feedback before you purchase.  One other note is to inquire about the expiration date.  Most high end products will have an expiration – even samples.  Products (even perfumes) lose their efficacy past a certain point.  Make sure that the products you’re getting are fresh.

If you’ve gotten a great high end deal, please let us know in comments.
